Nintendo Friend Codes - Background

So what are Friend Codes? A friend code is a unique identification that is issued to every Nintendo Wii console and every Wii or DS game that is capable of being played online.  These codes are a 12 or 16 digit number, yes you heard correctly, they are a gigantic number which is extremely difficult to memorise and is extremely difficult to trade with other gamers.

So why is it difficult to trade? Well, let's take Xbox Live as an example, when you want to befriend someone it's usually a case of selecting the gamer from your Xbox and selecting "Send Friend Request", this then issues an immediate message to the other gamer asking whether they wish to accept or decline, 2 words to summarise this - dead simple.

With Nintendo's online model you do not have this luxury, no siree, if you want to add someone to your friends list on your Nintendo Wii or DS then you have to find out their 12/16 digit number (usually on an internet forum) and then register that into your console or game, and guess what? No message, no notification is sent to the gamer because Nintendo feel that if you want to be "paired up" as friends then you should know this person personally, yes I'm serious, they expect you to be sat in the same room trading codes all day.

Anyhow, I digress, the reason this is painful is for 2 very important reasons - 1) the other player doesn't know you've registered them unless you get in touch with them using the variety of communication methods available in this day age, which means unless they know you've registered they won't register you - unless they have by chance.  Now there are many ways of communicating with someone to inform them, an open internet forum message, a personal message, a newsgroup, an email or even face to face?  What if you've just registered 10 friends? Are you going to then individually message them, how do you know they've got the message? How do you know if they've registered your code in return?  Reason 2) you have to register your code in multiple places to stand any chance of receiving registered friends, there are many, many forums out there that you're going to have to register on and then post your friend codes on.

The other pain is finding fellow gamers who own the same console or games as you, there are hundreds of forums with hundreds of threads, you see where I'm going with this, trying to find other friends in this unstructured manner is both time-consuming, messy and unmanageable.
